James finds his voice through music

23-year-old James loves classical music, a passion he inherited from his grandmother, who played the piano for the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company! So when he was 10, he bought a piano from a charity shop and taught himself how to play it. But some of the keys kept sticking, so it never sounded as good as he wanted.

After doing some research, he applied for a Music for All David Hughes Piano Award to purchase a Yamaha 500, the perfect piano to further his musical practice. We are excited to share that we were able to grant James his dream piano. James is autistic, and at times can be quite socially isolated. Having access to a piano will help James’ mental health, as well as provide opportunities for him to socialise and connect with his peers over shared interests.

Since receiving it, he’s learned to play Brahms’ Lullaby, and he now hopes to learn the Carol of the Bells to perform at the next Christmas party for the Macular Society, where he volunteers.
